Friends and Lovers?

As I was relaxing on an unexpected snowday,
I thought it was the perfect opportunity

to cozy up on the sofa and catch a great movie,
an "old classic". Since Valentines's Day is
right around the corner and love is in the air,
I figured a romantic comedy would suit me just fine.
Enter, my all time favorite, When Harry Met Sally.

As everyone knows, the whole premise of this
wonderfully romantic and funny movie
is the idea behind whether a man and woman
can be true friends.
I believe that men and women will have a difference
in opinion regarding this issue until the end of time
but whatever the reality may be, I think this movie
is worth watching again and again. Especially this weekend:-)

When choosing a song for your first dance
as husband and wife,
there are just a few things you need to keep in mind.
In my opinion, it is as simple as selecting a song
that is meaningful to both of you
and speaks about your relationship together.
Make sure you reflect your unique personality
as a couple and choose a song that has lasting power.
You should love this song just as much
in twenty years as you do today.

Also, think about whether you are a more
traditional or contemporary couple?
What genre of music suits your particular style?
Additionally, a positive message about love and an
upbeat mood is also important when selecting this special song.

How to choose a Wedding gown

So you're engaged. Congratulations! Once you have set the date and decided exactly what type of Wedding you want, you can now begin the process of finding the "perfect" gown. As you look through the latest Bridal magazines at all the beautiful gowns, you may find yourself wondering, where do I start? Of all the videos I viewed, I found this one to be the best. It packs a lot of useful information in this five minute narrative. Remember...keep an open mind when shopping. Sometimes, the gown you never dreamed you would choose will wind up being the perfect one for you and your body type!

Addressing Do's and Don'ts

If you are planning a traditional wedding, much of the same formality that appears in the invitation is also used on the envelopes. The outer envelope will include the guests FULL formal name including any title, whether it is professional, social, religious, etc. On the inner envelope you would list their names with no address and list their children (if invited) by their first names only. I think it is nice to address intimate relatives by their title - grandma, aunt, uncle.

Here are some etiquette guidelines that will help you when addressing your envelopes...

DO address all wedding invitation envelopes by hand or have them done by a calligrapher or calligraphy machine. NEVER PRINT ON LABELS!!!

DO spell out all street names and states.

DO address the invitation to both members of a married couple such as Mr. and Mrs. Anthony DiSalvio.

DO send ONE invitation to couples living together, and address it to BOTH of them with each name appearing on a SEPARATE line.

DO list a ranking title FIRST, regardless of gender. DO list a woman with a professional or military title on a separate line, ABOVE her husband's name on the outer envelope. On the inner envelope you would still use her title, but she and her husband would be listed on the same line, her name first.

Mr. John Shepherd

Inner: Doctor Shepherd and Mr. Shepherd
(Next blog will discuss common titles and how they should be addressed).

DO send a separate invitation to children over sixteen years of age. If there is more that one sibling over the age of sixteen, one invitation may be sent to the two of them, listing their names ALPHABETICALLY.

DO list the names of children who are invited to the wedding under their parents names on the INNER envelope.

DON'T write "and family"

DON'T write "and guest". Take the time to find the name of the guest's significant other. This could be a tough one for some people:-)

DON'T abbreviate.

Green ideas from Mr. and Mrs. "Greene"

Jimmy and Elizabeth Greene were married July 17, 2009 at The Woodland Inn and Resort in Wilkes Barre Pennsylvania (http://www.thewoodlandsresort.com/). This venue has breathtaking views and natural beauty. Elizabeth had told me about a few of the "Greene" and homemade ideas that she had incorporated into her Wedding and I thought they would be inspirational to other future Brides. Here is a little description of some of Elizabeth's ideas in her own words. We are waiting for her professional album...

"Our theme originated from the last name of my husband [to be], Greene. I chose a shade of green for my bridesmaids to wear and planned to be married outside in the woods at our venue. The idea for the centerpieces was to bring the outdoors inside to the reception and "Go Green[e]". I was inspired by a photograph from Martha Stewart's wedding magazine and my idea evolved creatively from there. After completing the craft I realized how special the personal touch would effect me and my guests. Special because it was impressive to be a homemade project done with my dad, mom, sister and husband. We gifted this unique centerpiece to one lucky guest at each table. The centerpieces made with wooden flowers will last a lifetime."

"My dad had cut and stained the bases. My mom, sister and I had put them together. Each had two candles (ikea) one in a glass hurricane (the dollar store) and one on a glass base (online purchase) a wooden watering can (Michael's) and two sticks (ikea) to hold our homemade table signs. Each centerpiece was decorated differently from the next with ribbon, hemp, rope (Michael's) and wooden roses (http://www.petalbypetal.com/). Instead of table numbers, we titled our tables on one side and on the other side had a fun fact about the title. For example, one table was titled 9th and Federal. The opposite side said "Jimmy and Elizabeth shared their first apartment together at these cross streets in the Italian Market." This was a fun way to get guests to mingle. Guests also enjoyed the centerpiece give-a-way. The DJ had a "hot potato" game where each table passed a set of keys, a champagne glass, and a napkin. When the music stopped, if you were left with the keys you were the designated driver. The glass meant you were in charge of getting drinks from the bar for your table and the napkin meant you won the center piece."

"Instead of a unity candle, Jimmy and I watered a tree. Our pastor made many scripture references to nurturing a tree. Our favors were tree seedlings with messages that said, "As our love grows and prospers over the years, so too will this tree."

Bridesmaids' Ball - Help fight Cancer

Why:Every five minutes, someone is diagnosed with a blood cancer, and every ten minutes someone dies from a blood cancer.

How: Through generous corporate sponsorships, the Bridesmaids’ Ball brings together a variety of industries to help raise critical funds and to show support for those living with blood cancers. The Bridesmaids’ Ball is put together by a wonderful group of volunteers and the generosity of our vendors.

"This isn't Tuesday night!" I couldn't resist using this
rather comical statement as the title of this post.
A sales rep said this to me today in jest, to communicate
the way he felt about the products he was selling.
I definitely understood him.
He was talking about being "special".
And that, is what our lingerie department is all about.

So, with that being said, we just got back from a
very busy and productive day at the Curve Show in NYC
and have some gorgeous new pieces of lingerie for
Winter '09 and Spring '10. We carefully selected a

While vacationing in Ocean City, NJ this summer, I planned a nice day trip with my son to Cape May. Since I am always looking for ways to combine business with pleasure, I thought it was the perfect opportunity to take an unguided tour of this charming Jersey shore Victorian town and then pay a visit to the historical and much talked about Congress Hall. With my three year old tot-in-tow, we headed off for a great day of adventure (photo above is courtesy of beachyinthecity.blogspot.com).

Although I have a GPS in my van, I opted not to use it. Instead I decided to enjoy a slow joyride through Cape May and soak up the sights and sounds of this visually stimulating town. Being a resident of New Jersey for nearly all my life and having an architectural background, I am not sure how I managed to NEVER visit Cape May! I have always admired the appeal and charm of Victorian period architecture with all the lacy gingerbread details, steeply pitched roofs, bay windows, wrap around porches, balconies and rainbow colored exteriors. When I decided to pull over and figure out where I was, I just happened to stop right in front of Congress Hall! Perfect!

The "pleasure" part of my trip consisted of my son and I leisurely strolling around and shopping on Washington Street and Beach Avenue. There were plenty of clothing, lingerie and gift boutiques, jewelry and toy shops, ice cream parlors, restaurants, etc. I even took a few moments to go into the Church of Our Lady Star of the Sea to light a couple candles, and to admire the beauty within. The next few photographs are buildings that I saw in the surrounding area of Congress Hall. I think they capture the true feeling of Cape May quite beautifully. Congress Hall

Ok, on to the "business" part of the trip:-)! When all the shopping and ice cream eating was complete, we took a tour of Congress Hall. I have only read about this exclusive seaside resort in elegant Wedding publications and have seen many gorgeous photographs. It has a relaxed but luxurious feel. It occupies an entire beachfront block that overlooks the Atlantic Ocean. It is a perfect choice for couples looking for an elegant and romantic beach location to tie the knot.

Upon entry, what I found to be the most striking, and aesthetically appealing, was the mix of colors chosen for the interior walls. It changed from room to room from canary yellow to Tiffany blue to varying shades of brown, etc. The painted black and white checker board floor in the Grand Ballroom was another amazing decor standout. Just speaking from a color palette perspective, this historical building has PERSONALITY!

Other standout features include the classic grand lawn in which many couples are married. The sweeping veranda, with wooden rocking chairs, is another location where Weddings and cocktail hour celebrations are held. Couples can also wed on Congress Beach if they so desire. The eclectic feel of Congress Hall is further exemplified by the nightclub in the basement. When I entered The Boiler Room, I got the feeling I was back in Manhattan in a trendy club in Soho. It definitely has a cool NYC vibe going on; original exposed brick walls, a stainless steel bar and adjoining tables, dark red lamps, cozy couches and low tables. I can only imagine the atmosphere when the lights are dimmed, and the music is jamming. Certainly a great place to continue the party and gather for after Wedding cocktails. The Boiler Room takes a very unexpected departure from the elegant surroundings on the upper floors but is really quite intriguing!

You found the perfect Bridal gown and you had a dream come true Wedding. Now, you are wondering where to take your beloved dress to clean the DIRTY hemline and to remove that lipstick, food or wine stain.

You can treasure your special moment in time with our HAND cleaning and preservation service. A Beautiful Touch deals with a local business (female owned) that has 30 years in the Bridal business. Experience is very important when deciding where to take your priceless gown. Fabrics are delicate and must be handled properly. Also, if you have elaborate and extensive beading or crystals on your gown, the high heat of the machines (at the dry cleaners) can severely damage, melt or destroy that beautifully detailed work.

Your gown will be hand-cleaned to it's original brightness with a special hypo-allergenic solvent. It will then be treated for preservation. The gown and veil will be placed in a window box for you to view. The box will be incased in an outer box for safe storage. This process will take about one to two months. You may take the gown out of the window box if you wish to observe the brightness, then carefully repack for storage.

Please store your gown in room temperature ONLY. Excessive heat will cause a breakdown of the fibers, causing the gown to yellow. DO NOT STORE IN AN ATTIC! Basement storage, due to moisture, may cause mildew.

We do not recommend storing your shoes or slip within the box. Shoes could soil the gown and the slip takes up too much space. There is however, a larger box available if you must include the slip. You may store the garter or pillow.

A HALF deposit is required at the initial drop off and the balance is due upon completion. If you wish to have your gown hand-cleaned and preserved please call me at the Boutique to make an appointment for drop off time and inquire about prices (856-858-3777). We kindly ask that you make an appointment so there is no waiting time.

Real Brides - Beautiful Presentations

"What a Wonderful World"

It's time to "take 10" and break away from all the Wedding planning and give your mind a much needed rest and listen to a feel good song. Well, ok, one song but two very different versions. We could all use a beautiful reminder of how "wonderful" the world is around us. This song is so touching, it gives me chills (and sometimes happy tears) every time I hear it and is a perfect choice for your Wedding song list.

The first version is from, of course, Louis Armstrong, the legendary trumpeter. And the second is from Rod Stewart. Although Rockin' Rod is one of my favorites, I think I prefer the original classic by Satchmo. I still love both versions and wanted to share them with my Brides and readers. Calligraphy Guidelines

The term calligraphy comes from two Greek words roughly meaning artistic beauty and writing or drawing. Or in my book, beautiful handwriting. If you are a Bride and interested in using a Calligrapher to address your Wedding invitation envelopes and placecards, look no further:-) I provide HAND calligraphy services through my Wedding boutique, A Beautiful Touch. The above photograph is an example of my writing on a placecard at a client's Wedding (photo courtesy of Ryan Estes).

I have been interested in beautiful writing for a very long time and starting practicing in the ninth grade:-) Also, I studied Interior Design/Architecture in College and was trained as an "old" school draftsman, which means I printed everything by hand INSTEAD of using computer aided design to generate my blueprints.

So with that being said, please use the guidelines I have provided below to get you started with your Wedding guest list. I hope you find this information to be helpful!

Please use a WORD format to set up your guest list and NOT Excel.

Kindly CENTER all guest names and addresses on the page.
Please write 10 guest names and addresses per page.
You may find it helpful to alphabetize your guest list or separate them according to the Bride's family and the Groom's. Do whatever you find is easier.
Please include YOUR name, address, phone number and date of Wedding on the first page of your guest list.
Please REVIEW and carefully check your information. I print exactly what you write.

How to avoid a "MOB" scene

Of course by MOB, I mean Mother-of-the Bride. This next post is going to be discussing the Moms' Dress code. This advice is given by N.Y.C. Bridal Atelier owner Mark Ingram as written in InStyle Weddings. I have seen too many times where the Bride is unhappy with the style or color of the dress that her soon to be Mother-in-law chooses for the upcoming Wedding. I am sure that in the very distant future, I too will obtain the title Mother-of-the Groom. I will be certain to archive this post and abide by this information happily:-)

The Bride should take the initiative and tell them what she is wearing.
Both mothers should be taking cues from the Bride. "Let them know the shape, fabric and level of ornamentation of your dress so they can look for outfits that are keeping with the tone," says Ingram. I personally, have many Brides that take both moms on their search for the perfect gown. If this is the case, then this first step will be relatively easy. Although BEWARE of allowing too many people tag along because an abundance of opinions can become frustrating and often confusing.

Send YOUR mom shopping first.
Traditionally, the Mother-of-the Bride buys her dress and then describes it to the Mother-of-the-Groom," says Ingram. "Communication is key." Make sure you are very descriptive about your Mother's dress, send your fiance's Mother a photo or tell her the color, style and designer. You need to do this so she can choose her dress appropriately and not look as though she belongs at a different event. Also, and most importantly, so she is careful not to outshine your Mom!!

Give them guidelines.
As a Bride you can call the shots but make sure you call them tactfully:-) It is well within your rights to steer both Moms toward certain colors or away from them if you want. The strength of your influence will be completely dependant upon their personalities. In a perfect world, the Moms' should follow these rules:

Keep the choice of dress in the color family. Selecting varying shades of your Wedding palette will make things look very cohesive without being to matchy-matchy.
Nothing overly sexy. Even if Mom has a premier membership at the local gym, ask her to keep the hemline at the knee or below and the neckline on the conservative side. I know a few "older" women who still think they are in their 20's and dress like their teenage daughter and friends. Make sure they dress age appropriate!
Their drama level should be below yours. If your dress has sleeves, theirs shouldn't be strapless; if you're wearing a sheath they shouldn't be in ball gowns. I think this guideline is important and not quite as obvious as the previous two suggestions.
No white. Period. According to Mark Ingram, "you would be surprised at how many moms and Mothers-in-law convince themselves that a "cream" dress is appropriate.

During the past few days, I have found some really great articles and pretty cool websites that I think may be of value to you. Since I have many upcoming Weddings in the next three months, I know there will be many Brides planning the seating arrangements for their Wedding guests.

This can get a bit tricky especially if you have a large guest list or unfortunately have feuding family members or divorced parents that are not on good speaking terms:-( I found this website through Brides Magazine and thought it was a little bit like playing musical chairs! I logged onto this site to experiment with a trial run and found it relatively simple and straight forward to understand. You can add tables of various styles and sizes and move them anywhere on the screen. You can also drag and drop guest names as easy as can be and save several versions to see which one works best. Additionally, you can import a guest list from an Excel or Word file. This site can be used for planning the seating arrangement for any party or celebration!

There is a $20 fee for this service and it is good for 6 months. There is a money back guarantee within 7 days if you are not satisfied. I think it is well worth the cost for the convenience. Good luck!

"Beauty" tip of the week

A few times a month, I will be posting a "tip of the week" about make-up and skin care specifically geared for the Bride-to-be. These beauty tips will be given by Nicole Wood, of The Beauty Lounge in Westmont, NJ (just two blocks from my Boutique). She has over 17 years in the industry as a make-up artist/model and skincare specialist working with major magazines, companies and celebrities. Nicole offers services "on location" or at her spa.

Nicole's tip for great brows and skin...

Six months prior to your wedding, you should start with grooming and shaping your brow. The reason for this is, if you want a specific shape for your brow, they grow very slow and it will give you ample time to achieve that perfect brow. You should start looking at pictures in magazines that you like. I can help and guide you with this.

Also, start with a simple skin care regime such as a hydrating face wash, toner and moisturizer. I additionally suggest, starting with glycolic products to get that perfect glow and skin tone.
I would also highly recommend hydrating and balancing facials during this time as well and once a week before your wedding and any waxing 4 days before as well. I can help you achieve your perfect brows, skin, make-up and hair.

One of the most rewarding parts of my business is when I see a former Bride walk through our door toting her newborn in a car seat!!!! If you are looking for a creative way to customize your Save the Date cards, your Bridal shower or Wedding Invitations try sites like zazzle.com or stamps.com. These companies allow you to create (or select from their vast design catalog) U.S. Post Office - approved custom postage. It is a perfect way to show off your wedding motif or engagement photo. I especially love them for the Thank you cards AFTER the Big day!! (Btw, the price of stamps is being raised to .44 cents on May 11, 2009)!

Here are a couple of tips to remember when mailing your Wedding invitations...

1. Weigh them FIRST before mailing! Assemble one COMPLETE invitation and take it to the Post Office to get weighed BEFORE you purchase any postage.

2. SQUARE invitations cost more! Regardless of weight, square invitations will require additional postage. Nothing is worse than having your beautiful invitation returned all marked up because of inadequate postage!

3. A .42 cent stamp might NOT be enough. If you have direction cards, hotel recommendations, etc. you may have to add additional postage. More stationary means more weight. Custom stamps are great for this because your outer envelope will only have 1 stamp.

4. Don't forget to add postage to your RESPONSE CARD. This helps your guests to get their response out to you in a timelier fashion. I included a photo of a custom stamp with the letters RSVP. Perfect!

5. Mail invitations 4 - 6 weeks prior to your Wedding. You want to give your guests enough time to respond and MORE importantly you need to finalize your headcount AND seating arrangements...

This is why I love these custom stamps. It is so nice for your guests to open their mailboxes and be greeted by the New Mr. and Mrs!

"Pearly" Girls

When we see a woman wearing pearls, we quite naturally think of the words elegant, classy and refined to describe her. Jacqueline Bouvier wore a strand of pearls when she wed John F. Kennedy, as did Queen Elizabeth II on her Wedding day back in 1947. Since ancient times, the pearl has been the symbol of unblemished perfection. It is the oldest known gem and for centuries it was considered the most valuable.

The Greeks believed that if a women wore pearls on her Wedding day, it would promote marital harmony and take away a new Bride's tears. They associated the pearl with love and marriage and unrivaled beauty. In ancient Rome, this organic gem was considered to be the ultimate symbol of wealth and status. There are however, some traditions that think just the opposite and say they will bring the Bride tears and unhappiness:-( Hmmm.

In other cultures, the tradition of passing a strand along family lines for good luck reached it's height during the Victorian Era. It is not practiced currently, but instead it is more customary to see a Father of-the-Bride or Groom present the Bride-to-be with this iridescent beauty.

Today, pearls have come to represent an elegant, chic and glamorous fashion statement. They are a necessary staple in every well-dressed woman's jewelry box (photos courtesy of pearloasis.com). So how lucky am I that my birthday is in June and the pearl is my birthstone!

When you are planning one of the most important and memorable days of your life, it is always a good idea to get solid advice from experienced Wedding planners, professionals in the industry and "Real" Brides who have first-hand knowledge of "The Big Day".

My advice would be to listen to all of the positive experiences as well as some of the "not so positive" and weigh all the information very carefully. Do your homework and research areas that are not at all familiar to you, such as "is a destination Wedding less expensive than having a small but intimate reception locally" or "are the special flowers you want "in season" for your December Wedding"?

"Something blue" tradition

Did you ever wonder where the Bridal tradition
Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue and a lucky sixpence for her shoe

came from?

Well, lots of people do. This cute poem is an old tradition dating back to the Victorian Age. Many of the Wedding traditions we embrace today, including the popularity of the Bridal trousseau, emerged in this very romantic Era. Each item mentioned in this poem is meant to be a good luck token for the Bride. And who doesn't want a little luck? If she carries them on her Wedding day then her marriage will be happy. The vast majority of my customers definitely follow this tradition and have quite a few options when selecting the "something blue" portion of this poem. I will explain what each line represents and then give a few good ideas for getting the "lucky" items you need. First let's start with the "Something old". These words symbolize CONTINUITY with the Bride's family and past. Some beautiful ideas for this include a cherished piece of jewelry from Grandma, a bonnet from the Bride's Christening day, a keepsake hankie from Mom's Wedding day or an antique piece of lace stitched into the hem of her gown.

"Something new" represents OPTIMISM and HOPE for the Bride's future and what lies ahead for her. Now speaking from a woman's point of view, aren't we always optimistic when buying something new? That is certainly true and can be easily achieved through the new purchase of a Wedding gown, a gorgeous pair of sparkly earrings and bracelet (pictured left, courtesy of A Beautiful Touch), fabulous high heels (courtesy of something old, something new blog) or something very sweet and sentimental. The list goes on and on...

The "something borrowed" portion of this poem is supposed to be obtained through a happily married relative or friend, whose good fortune in marriage hopefully will carry over to the Bride. Many of "my" Brides find this to be the most challenging aspect of this traditional poem, I think because of style differences or preferences. They often borrow a pretty purse, a small piece of antique jewelry or a sentimental item such as a small family heirloom that has emotional value to the Bride.

Now, as for the "something blue" item of this poem, the color blue has been connected to Weddings far before the Victorian Age. In ancient Rome, Brides wore blue to represent LOVE, FIDELITY and MODESTY. This calming hue has also been chosen by early Christians to dress the Virgin Mary. Therefore, PURITY, is also associated with this color. And this last fact, which I find very interesting, is that before the late 19th century, blue was a popular color for Wedding gowns. Think about this proverb, "Marry in blue, lover be true".

The modern Bride can be extremely creative with finding her "something blue". There are plenty of contemporary and trendy, as well as traditional items to choose from. We carry many personalized options, such as silk and cotton panties (pictured above and sold in our Boutique), embroidered lace hankies and

monogrammed "dress tags" that are stitched in blue thread and secured to the hem of the Bride's gown. Also, if you want to show your individuality, choose the blue crystal "i do" shoe appliques (pictured above and sold in our Boutique), or a blue stoned bracelet (pictured above left and sold in our Boutique), toe ring or ankle bracelet. Or possibly a blue Swarovski crystal pin that you can fasten to your dress or bouquet (we carry all of these items in our boutique). Additionally, you can select a beautiful lace garter and coordinating hankie that is embellished with a petite blue ribbon. The only thing that limits you is your imagination!!

And finally, a silver sixpence in the bride's shoe represents WEALTH and FINANCIAL SECURITY. A sixpence was a coin that was minted in Britain from 1551 to 1697. Back in Scottish custom, a groom put a silver coin under his foot for good luck. It should be in the LEFT shoe for the best possible luck! Today, a copper penny is sometimes substituted, although we do sell the sixpence.

So there you have it! The tradition of the cute little poem that we have all grown up to know and love but wondered what does it mean? Now you know, so you can start collecting your good luck tokens!!!

"International" Flower Style

With a hint of Spring in the air and the hopeful anticipation of April "showers" on the way, (Bridal that is), I thought I would give you a little inspiration for planning your beautiful Bridal bouquet.

I can tell a busy Bridal season is quickly approaching because of the number of calls I receive about "cozy" gifts. Inquiring customers want something a little different than the "same old" things off the registry. Don't get me wrong, we need our pots and pans, fine china and food processors but taking a more personalized and love driven approach always gets more ooohs and ahhhs from the crowd.

Relatives and friends love to shower the happy couple with special gifts that are personalized with their new Mr. and Mrs. title. Over the years, I have received so many beautiful photographs and thank you letters from "my" Brides. I am excited that now I have the opportunity to share some of their gorgeous photos and ideas from their unforgettable Wedding day. I am sure they will be inspiring to the future Brides-to-be!

Catherine Tanzi and Eric Kennedy were married on October 12, 2008 (what a perfect Italian and Irish combination)! Since their Wedding was in autumn, they selected a rich and vibrant color palette, that consisted of browns, oranges, and berries. These colors are consistently carried throughout their Wedding and are prevalent in the choice of Bridesmaid dresses, floral bouquets, the decorations on their Wedding cake and favors.

The month of October is a stunning and picturesque time of year, which is so accurately reflected with all of these fine details. I love the chocolate brown dresses that are so strongly contrasted with the eye-catching orange bouquets. The Wedding cake, well, just "takes the cake" and the wine favors are a very sweet ending to a picture-perfect day!

Greetings from Disney!

Since I just returned from my Disney family vacation, I thought it would be so apropos to write about what many consider a "magical" Wedding and Honeymoon destination. This was my fourth trip in 20 years, and every time seems to bring special memories. My thoughts go back now to a former Bride, Diane Coleman (and yes, I still remember her full name:-), who was married there 8 years ago. She choose to wed on Valentine's Day, on the beach and at sundown. Her pictures were romantic, yet casually elegant, with the serene water in the background and the setting sun in the distance.

Getting married in front of Cinderella's castle would definitely be a little too much for me, but Disney has a Pavilion for more traditional couples, like Diane, who would like to tie the knot without Mickey and his crew. It actually looked quite enchanting from a distance (I could only see it from the monorail as I traveled to and from our villa). The Grand Floridian Resort and Spa, which is the neighboring property, is a beautiful facility. I was fortunate enough to visit when it first opened.

I included a link so you could view photos of the properties, interior, props, etc. From what I hear, it can be quite expensive to get married at Disney. If you are looking to save money, it might be best to have a small reception locally and then venture off to Orlando for your Honeymoon! Make sure you visit in the off season so you can focus on your special memories and not the crowds and long lines:-)!

ABC News: First Comes Marriage, Then Comes Love

I was very intrigued the other evening when I sat down to watch an ABC news 20/20 special: the science of seduction. The basis of this story is how an Indian man moved to the United States to attend graduate school and then decided to stay for work. After years of dating, he could not find a women he wanted for a life partner. So he turned to his family back in India for help...

...they answered an ad for "Groom wanted for a beautiful young girl". The couple met and in 10 days they decided to seal the deal, had a lavish and traditional Hindu wedding and the rest is history. Wow. I am always very fascinated by the traditions of other cultures and how they compare to the American way of life.

Apparently, the success rate for "arranged" marriages is very high probably due to the attitude "I am in this forever" and "love will come later". This last statement reminds me of a time when I was much younger...my Grandmother asked me, "well Cherie, why don't you want to become serious with boyfriend A " , and I responded "he is a very sweet person Gram, but I don't like him in that way", her answer to that was "well you will GROW to love him". Hmmm, maybe there was some merit in her very wise words:-)

In fact, my neighbor, Arun, is Indian and his parents arranged his marriage 28 years ago. We have very enlightening conversations about this traditional idea, which is why I choose to comment on it. So what do you think? What is the secret to a successful and lasting marriage? Chemistry, values, similar educational backgrounds, science? It sure would be fascinating to finally pinpoint the answer to this age old subject.

"TRASH the DRESS!"

Would you EVER, E V E R even think about "trashing" your dress after your wedding? That's exactly what some Brides are doing! They are scheduling photo shoots on the beach, or other "not so pristine" locations as a way to add more creative and unconventional pictures to their traditional Wedding album.

Well, OK, maybe not trashing them. Actually, the term "trash the dress" is just a buzzword that was intended to ignite interest in this national Bridal phenomenon that made it's mark in Atlantic City in the summer of 2007. The name apparently doesn't accurately reflect what necessarily happens.

To some Brides, the very thought of even the slightest little speck of dirt soiling her beloved dress, sends chills racing up and down her spine! Depending upon the ideas of the Bride and her photographer, her dress is not trashed or destroyed. It certainly will become wet, sandy or muddied on the bottom, obviously. A Bride should definitely consider the cost, fabric and sentimental value of her dress before booking a session like this.

I think that this is a very intriguing idea for an open-minded Bride to capture creative, fun, spontaneous and possibly even edgy photographs. It is a great way to get more mileage out of a dress that may otherwise stayed sealed in a box for a very long time. You can always have it cleaned and preserved AFTER your day on the Beach!! And since we are so close to the Jersey Shore, why not? A very cool idea!

Baby, it's cold outside!!!

It might be cold outside but it certainly is warming up inside!!! Sweet new babydolls from Betsey Johnson are arriving just in time for Cupid. Fine Bridal lingerie is one of the beautiful gems of my boutique, but we sometimes like to spice things up a bit with playful and flirty pieces from favorite designers. The padded bra top is an added bonus!!

Now speaking from a Bridal perspective, I think black is definitely for the Honeymoon, probably not for the Wedding night. We had a future Bride-to-be come in today with her mom and buy one in each color! Well, that's a great way to solve that problem!! More new Spring arrivals are rolling in weekly. Love is in the air:-)

Display Showers - to display or not to display?

If you are searching for a contemporary way to host a Bridal shower, a "display shower" may be just the way to go. They are appropriate for people who do not want to go the traditional route of watching the Bride open gift after gift. Also, it may be a great choice for parties that have a large number of guests. In this article, I will write about my experience with a display shower for 80 guests...

The invitation is very important. The Mother-of-the-Bride selected an invitation that was inserted into a clear cellophane bag and then tied with a pretty ribbon (it was then placed in the white envelope and mailed). It was a perfect selection that indicated to the guest how the gifts should be "wrapped". Guests are to "wrap" their gift in cellophane so that it has a transparent view. Bows, ribbons or other beautiful decorations can be then used to further enhance the presentation.

In the first photo, my co-worker and I started prepping the three six foot banquet tables with hat boxes and other items to LIFT the gifts and give the table dimension and interest. We were careful to make some areas higher in an effort to spotlight the larger gifts. A flat surface is not going to look attractive and may appear rather boring and dull. So make sure you are prepared! The linens are then laid out to cover the boxes. This preparation is done PRIOR to the guests arrival.

As the guests arrive, their gifts are placed and positioned on the table according to a specific category such as kitchen, bath and bed. This method makes it easier to organize items according to a theme and looks very appealing. Notice in the second photo all the kitchen items...cookbooks, coffee maker, food processor etc. Also, AND most importantly, there are tags on the gifts that correspond to the appropriate gift giver! This makes it very easy for the Bridal attendants to record all the Brides beautiful gifts in an organized fashion. Additionally, it ensures that everyone feels appreciated and it invites free flowing conversation amongst the guests. A display shower allows the guests to mingle more and enjoy each others company while they are waiting for lunch to be served.

The third photo displays some of the bath items. Notice how you can see the powder blue bath towels through the clear "wrap" and the pretty, sheer, organza ribbon that is used for embellishment. The only gift that we decided not to unveil was the gift from Tiffany's. This was done because of the expense and fragility of the gift enclosed. Also, the color of the box speaks VOLUMES. Everyone knows where it came from!!:-) If you are hosting a display shower, always be especially careful of gifts such as fine china and other exquisite items. It is best I think NOT to display them or set aside a special table with just one setting of the fine china, flatware, glassware etc. Use your best judgement.

After lunch is served and the Bridal shower is coming to a successful close, it will now be time for the Bride to open her very special gifts from her Mother, Grandmother and Mother-in-law. These should be the only gifts that are wrapped in a traditional manner. As you can see in the last photo (foreground of picture), my customer rented the Bridal chair especially for this. It is appropriate to set these special gifts apart from the others so they can have the full attention of all the guests.

Hopefully, this information was helpful in deciding if a display shower is the kind of party you would like to host. Regardless of the theme, setting or other details, just make sure you put your best effort forward and always think about the personality of the Bride. The type of person she is should guide you in the right direction. Happy planning!!

"adults only" etiquette

The subject of how to address an "adults only" shower or wedding has come up time and time again. Tradition (and proper addressing etiquette) dictates that only those whose names appear on the envelope are invited. Do NOT have "adults only" printed on ANY invitation, whether it is for the bridal shower or wedding! There are much more eloquent ways of handling this sometimes delicate situation.

Some of my customers that are planning a black tie affair or a rather large wedding celebration are quite insistent on verbalizing their wishes on the RECEPTION CARD, which is included with the formal wedding invitation. I recommend to print "Adult Reception" on the reception card (NOT THE INVITATION), and then proceed to give all the details such as the place, address and time.

Although this is acceptable, I prefer to bypass it completely and to address the invitation envelope only to the intended invitee(s). The inner envelope of a formal wedding invitation is where you directly spell out that specific information. For instance, if you are inviting Mr. and Mrs. John Jones, Jr., that information will be written on the outer envelope. Jessica and John will be addressed on the inner envelope. This should make it very clear that two year old Johnny will be needing a sitter for the evening.

However, please be prepared to explain your wishes to parents who inquire. You can explain to them that although you and your fiance have many special little ones in your extended family, you have decided to have an "adults only" reception. Most of your friends and family will understand this and will hopefully look forward to an adult evening. Be firm. If you allow one you may offend others. For those that do not accept your wishes, they can choose to politely decline.

Additionally, keep in mind that if you have MANY family members or friends with children that live out-of-state or country, you may have to make special accommodations if you want all adults. Some parents will not feel comfortable leaving their little darlings behind and may have no other alternative. One idea is to hire a competent caretaker to watch them at a nearby relative's home. Another option is to have the babysitter at the reception facility in another small room. Although this last idea may work in some smaller and more casual settings, it is more of a hassle and financial burden in my opinion. Most of the larger banquet facilities in the south jersey region do not make provisions for this type of situation. It may take extra planning on your part to make everyone happy and comfortable.

Creative Shower Themes

THEMED invitations can be the start of a very fun, exciting and memorable occasion. The invitation you select will set the tone of the party you are planning and allow your guests to prepare accordingly for your event. Once, you have established a theme, you can then begin to gather information and ideas regarding the location, decorations, favors, flowers, music, linens, menu and drink selection etc.

How elaborate and detailed you decide to be, will depend completely upon your budget. Be creative and have fun! And if you're not, well then, find an event planner, creative friend or peruse bridal magazines, books and popular websites to stimulate your imagination.

DESTINATION OR BEACH themed Weddings and showers are increasingly popular and can range from informal and elegant to quite elaborate and romantic at exotic locals. The first invitation is an example of a CARRIBEAN BASH. The whimsical nature of the palm trees reaching out for each other, the gentle and calming waves in the background and the scattered shells in the sand, speaks of a get together that is going to be casually elegant with lots of fun glassware, frozen drinks, cool music and cute little paper umbrellas to set the mood!!

Many showers today are including men along with the ladies. They are popularly called JACK and JILL showers or COUPLES showers. And some have parties geared especially for the Groom.

I really like the example (above left), HAPPY HOUR and HANDYMAN SHOWER. With the assortment of tools and tape measure ribbon there should be no question what type of gift the guests should bring.

The KITCHEN or AROUND THE HOUSE SHOWER (above right) is a perfect theme for couples who love to cook and would like to hone their culinary skills. The apron, paired with all the kitchen utensils, gadgets galore and especially the festive red checkered ribbon says fun and easy going.

LINGERIE showers are quite girly and are a perfect choice for the Bride-to-be that is already established and has acquired much of the necessary household items. They are also fun for smaller showers between very close friends and relatives. It all depends on the age and personality of the guests invited but you can really have a blast planning the music and drink menu for this party. It's a GIRL'S NIGHT OUT!

Throwing a fabulous party does take a lot of planning and can, depending on the number of guests invited, cost a nice chunk of change. Discussing budgets and delegating responsibilities early on with the bridesmaids will hopefully eliminate unwanted problems with money. Get everyone involved so they can do their fair share of work. For instance, if one friend has a "green" thumb let her handle the floral decorations, if another is crafty let her pull together the favors. If someone is an incredible baker let her whip up some decadent desserts, you get the idea;-) Just have fun and make the planning a memorable event too!!!

Bridal Trousseau: Romantic or Trendy?

Romantic or trendy? That is the question. For some, the word peignoir set conjures up images of a hideous, out-dated, lace up to your neck number that will mortify the blushing Bride-to-be at her shower. She will stow it away in the attic where it is never to be seen again. Not true. Pretty underthings don't necessarily have to be uncomfortable, unsightly and "old fashioned".

So what's a Bride to do? Actually the Mother-of-the-Bride, which is our typical shopper, will be the judge of that. The traditional "romantic" peignoir set, which is a favorite of many, is usually a long beautiful gown accompanied by a relatively sheer matching robe (lingerie by Jonquil, picture, left). It is a very special gift presented by mom to her soon to be wed daughter at the bridal shower. A beautiful wedding garter, luxurious silk panties or satin covered low-heeled slippers may also be included in this traditional ensemble.

The tradition of the Bridal TROUSSEAU (French word: pronounced "true so") dates back to the Middle Ages. The trousseau originally included the Bridal gown, lingerie, clothing and other linens a Bride prepared for her marriage. These items symbolized a new beginning. The French word PEIGNOIR (pronoun "pen war") is more commonly used today to describe the Bride's wedding night lingerie.

Very often as well, we have the Mother-of-the-Groom that wishes to purchase something special for her future daughter in law. In my experience, it is probably more appropriate to select a cute bridal Pj or pretty camisole and panty set (camisole set by Arianne, picture, left). In most cases, it is best to leave the more elaborate and formal peignoir set to the bride's mother (unless the bridal shower is hosted by the Mother-of-the-Groom for HER family or the Bride's mother is deceased).

We carry styles that are elegant and feminine with exquisite lace and hand-sewn pearl details as well as the much more simple pieces that are preferred by girls who are not the "frilly" type (sweet and simple peignoir set by Oscar de la Renta, picture, left). Some mothers come in and say, "my daughter wants to wear her woolly socks!" Even for the girls who are not comfortable with the lacy or "frou-frou" lingerie, we carry a comfy and cute cotton nightshirt with the word bride embroidered on the front. We need to talk about those woolly socks though! Shorter versions of the more formal peignoir sets are the matching chemise or babydoll sets which styles range from gracefully refined, to pieces that are girly and a bit more flirtatious (flirty babydoll by Betsey Johnson, picture, above).
